Analysis

Among informational Google searches in Germany — queries about range, charging infrastructure, and EV subsidies — the EV share grew from 0.063% to 0.086% year-on-year, a 38% relative increase. Transactional intent, covering dealer visits, leasing comparisons, and car configurators, held steady at around 0.36% with only modest +14% growth: a clear divergence that puts Germany firmly in the research phase of an EV adoption curve.

Consumers are learning, not yet buying at scale

The structural gap between informational and transactional growth is consistent with a market entering a new awareness cycle rather than a buying frenzy. Germany's new income-scaled EV purchase incentive — worth up to €6,000, effective retroactively from January 2026, with the application portal expected to open in May — has given millions of households a concrete reason to research eligibility before visiting a dealer. Petrol prices near record highs in March 2026 added urgency to those calculations. The 38% surge in range and charging queries shows that practical barriers — not lack of awareness — remain the key friction point. Once subsidy applications open and early adopters share their experiences, transactional intent is well positioned to close the gap in H2 2026.

Methodology

Queries were classified using Google's own intent taxonomy, separating informational searches (how-to, range, charging, subsidy research) from transactional and commercial searches (buy, lease, dealer, configure). EV relevance was determined via a curated keyword set covering German EV terms, model names, and charging vocabulary, with exclusions for unrelated content. Each intent bucket's EV share is calculated as EV queries divided by that bucket's total search volume — making the two intents directly comparable as proportions of their own populations. Observation period: March 2025 to April 2026, approximately 4.2 million search events across both intent types and both years.
