Analysis

In Spring Sale 2025, German Amazon shoppers bought up in basket size during the promotional window: Beauty medians rose from €12.40 to €13.20, Electronics from €14.98 to €15.98, and Grocery from €6.55 to €7.99 — consistent with consumers timing larger or higher-margin purchases to coincide with Amazon Prime Day-style deals. Spring Sale 2026 reversed every one of those moves: Beauty dropped from €12.80 to €10.70, Electronics from €14.99 to €13.99, and Grocery collapsed from €6.98 to €4.36. Home & Kitchen held flat at €15.99; only Fashion held a small premium (€17.86→€19.85).

Kleinere Körbe, billigere Artikel — das Muster des Vor-Kaufens 2026

The direction of basket-size change is the key signal here, not the absolute euro amounts. In 2025, shoppers used promotional windows to bring forward bigger-ticket purchases — the classic deal-waiting behaviour visible in the category promo-share data. In 2026, the pattern inverts: buyers are placing orders during the Spring Sale window, but for smaller, cheaper items. <2-7,2-8>Globally, Amazon's Spring Sale 2026 grew only 3% year-on-year, a sharp deceleration, suggesting discount depth mattered.</2-8> <18-6>In Germany, consumer interest in large sale events has declined: 43% of German shoppers report being less interested in mega-sale events compared to two to three years ago.</18-6> Together, shallower deals and fading event enthusiasm pushed the Spring Sale 2026 basket into reverse.

Methodology

Median order value (€) is calculated for each category during the Spring Sale window (March 25–31) and the 14-day pre-sale baseline immediately preceding it, for both 2025 and 2026. The median is used rather than the mean to limit the influence of occasional high-value orders. The 14-day pre-sale window controls for category seasonality; the directional result holds when the window is extended by ±2 days. Orders are from German Amazon.de shoppers purchasing in EUR.
