How to Opt Out of Meta's AI training on your Data via Facebook

  1. On your Facebook Home Page, look for this notification about the introduction of new AI features and tap it:
Notification saying "We're planning new AI features for you. Learn how we use your information."
  1. You will see this panel informing you of your right to object. Click the "right to object" link to continue.
  1. You will be directed to a page titled "Object to Your Information Being Used for AI at Meta" that details the types of content they intend to use for training.
  1. Fill in the attached form. Make sure to put in the email address you use for Meta products.

You can use the following reason for the field titled "Please tell us how this processing impacts you":

I do not feel comfortable having images of my face, my thoughts and opinions, my artwork, or any other content created or supplied by me to be used to train an AI.
You have not disclosed how and for which specific purposes my information is going to be used in the future. I expect full transparency when it comes to the use of my personal data.
  1. Submit the form. A modal opens and you will receive an email from Meta with a code. Enter the code into the modal. Be quick. The code expires in one hour.
  1. Meta will review your request.
  1. If Meta decides to honor your objection, you will receive a confirmation email.

Opinion: On the unethical data collection practices in AI

AI isn't a bad thing. It can massively improve our lives, and we've even used it on several occasions in the creation of this very site. To achieve the almost magical results that make it so useful, it needs huge amounts of data to train on.

To date, however, the means by which this data is collected has been highly questionable, leaving users with little to no choice in the matter. On 𝕏 (formerly Twitter), one user has provided a great thread on the predatory design principles behind this opt-out process by Meta.

We believe that companies should be transparent about when they use our personal data to train their models and give us control over what content we are willing to share.

If data is the new oil, is FAANG the new OPEC?

Data is the new oil, with FAANG acting as the new OPEC. Unlike finite oil, data is non-rivalrous, non-fungible, and constantly growing, concentrating FAANG's market power. Users need control over their data to prevent its exploitation.
